Het Atlas initiatief is ontstaan uit de wens om ons leven op eigen voorwaardes vorm te geven en te experimenten met een andere manier van leven. We streven naar een dynamisch en zelfvoorzienend leven. Tijdens ons reizende bestaan willen we veel ruimte laten voor de ontmoeting met de ander en ons pad laten vormen door wat we onderweg tegenkomen. We denken dat de artistieke- en lokale projecten ons gaan helpen om op een doelgerichte en inhoudelijke manier relaties met anderen aan te gaan. De uitwisseling van elkaars werelden draagt bij aan de ontwikkeling van elkaars praktijken en onze blik op de wereld.
In 2015 kochten wij, Stijn de Geus (jachtbouwer) en Laura Schippers (kunstenaar) een voormalig Poolse viskotter. Het schip lag zwaar verwaarloosd aan de kade bij het dorpje Grünendeich in Duitsland. In een half jaar tijd hebben we de hoognodige klussen aan boord gedaan om het schip over de Noordzee naar Nederland te varen. Van september 2015 tot april 2023 zijn we onderdeel geweest van het culturele gebied Haveneiland in Breda. De gemeente gaf ons de ruimte om hier de Atlas verder op te knappen en om te bouwen tot een zelfvoorzienend en zeewaardig schip. Daarnaast vonden er regelmatig kunstevenementen aan boord plaats.
Voor de volgende fase in het project zijn we in april 2023 naar Museumhaven Willemsoord in Den Helder gevaren. Hier gaan we het schip gereed maken om van start te kunnen gaan met het Atlas Residency Programme en nemen we deel aan lokale kunst-, en cultuur evenementen.
Én last but not least, we gaan een kite-systeem als voortstuwing voor de Atlas ontwikkelen. Zodra dit werkt gaat ons reizend bestaan 'echt' van start, Ons plan is om op een langzaam tempo over de wereld varen. Onderweg willen we artistieke projecten faciliteren.

Atlas initiatief is a result of the desire to shape our lives on our own terms and to experiment with a different way of life. We endeavor a dynamic and self-sufficient life. During our nomadic way of living we want to leave a lot of space for meeting the other and to let our path be shaped by what we encounter along the way. We think that the artistic- and local projects will help us to engage with others in a purposeful and substantive way. The exchange of each other's worlds contribute to the development of each other's practices and our view of the world.
In 2015 we, Stijn de Geus (yacht builder) and Laura Schippers (visual artist) bought a former Polish fishing vessel. The abandoned ship was moored at a quay near the village of Grünendeich in Germany. In half a year we’ve done the much-needed jobs on board to sail the ship across the North Sea to the Netherlands. From September 2015 till April 2023 we were part of the cultural area Haveneiland in Breda. The municipality gave us the oppertunity to rebuild the Atlas and convert it into a self-sufficient and seaworthy ship. Besides working on the ship we regularly organize art events on board.
For the next phase in our project we'd sailed to Museumhaven Willemsoord in Den Helder in April 2023. Here we’ll prepare the ship's interior for the Atlas Residency Programme and we participate in local art- an cultural projects.
And last but not least, we'll develop a kite propulsion system for the Atlas. As soon as it works, our nomadic life will 'really' starts from then on. Our plan is to sail over the world, in a slow way. Along the way we want to facilitate artistic projects.
